This study uses Sir Walter Raleigh's own writings to explore his ideas, personality, and values, and his careers as soldier, voyager, visionary, politician, poet, patriot, and traitor. The study draws on new texts which have made available fresh versions of Raleigh's poems, letters, and travel narratives, and presents facts that often counter popular myths. Material is written in a readable narrative style. The book includes 18 b&w historical illustrations, five maps, and an epilogue on Raleigh's descendents. Nicholls is president and librarian of St John's College, Cambridge. Williams is honorary fellow of New College, Oxford. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
