Well done. It would have been better as a mini series to cover the long time period though.

This had to be made with either the tacit or explicit approval of the Royal Family…it is surely a Valentine to them. Consequently, no one exhibits anything resembling an actual personality. This is a shame, when the cast includes actors as faceted as Eileen Atkins and Alan Bates. (Both wasted). “Bertie & Elizabeth” seems simply a series of historical incidents strung together with the same dull characters occupying the center of it all. Perhaps this is the perfect metaphor for contemporary royalty, but at least “The King’s Speech” managed to take these geezers and run with them. Those events are dispatched with relative haste in this version, and truly the only sparks this wan little biopic strikes are in the portrayal of the Duke of Windsor and his Duchess. They come across as monstrously shallow, and extremely selfish from the get-go. They are the villains….but unfortunately there’s no real drama here in which they could take a proper place.

Expertly done Masterpiece Theater with, as ever, a wonderful period look and feel.
