Both "Montessori: Number Work" and "...Letter Work" begin with a letter to parents by Bobby and June George that explains the Montessori method of teaching, which focuses on the concrete before the abstract. The authors then present numbers 1-10, each as a quantity to count followed by a texture to trace. In "Letter Work," readers learn the sound a letter makes ("b" makes a "buh sound) and the shape of the letter before learning the name of the letter and how to recite the alphabet. In fact, the authors order the letters based on the motion with which you write the letter rather than alphabetically. "Montessori Letter Work" provides phonetics to pronounce, a texture to trace and a reference word to provide context. Colourful illustrations by Alyssa Nassner will appeal to kids, as will the books' long, rectangular shapes and tabs. Attention to detail including the tactile aspects of these books make them must-haves for every library.
