Easy to read, this book helped me to understand the reason for the "Arab Spring" protests in Syria and why this "civil war" has dragged on unlike those in Libya and Egypt. Lesch is very good in giving the leader of Syria's perspective on the current situation. So much of what we read in the papers is from a Western perspective. A balanced review of the causes and possible outcomes as Lesch provides views from Assad/the government, the protesters, the West, and Syrian's allies. After reading this book, it is easy to see how complicated it will be to find a peaceful solution that meets the expectations of all involved parties.
