"Twelve-year-old cousins Alice and Sophie are a study in contrasts. Alice, a tall brunette who lives in Montréal with only her dad, is a figure skater with a lot of talent and a bit of an attitude. Sophie, a short blond who lives on a dairy farm with her mom, dad and spooky little brother Sebastian, loves looking after their herd of cows. In January 1998, it starts to rain and it won't stop. The rain turns to ice and causes big trouble. First, the roads are closed, and then the power lines come down and the electricity is gone. Alice struggles to stay warm, alone in the dark, because her dad is working around the clock for Québec Hydro. Meanwhile, Sophie and her family fight to look after their high-maintenance dairy cows without power to run the water pumps, the milking machines or anything else." --From publisher.

It's January, 1998 and it begins to rain. Alice is at the arena practising for her next figure skating competition while her cousin and best friend, Sophie, is helping out on the family farm. The rain freezes, coating roads, bushes, trees, sidewalks and power lines with layers of ice. Alice's father works for the Hydro company and he must leave Alice at home while he helps repair the damage. Her Uncle Henri is unable to reach her house because of the ice and Alice finds herself truly alone. When Alice realizes that their elderly neighbour, Mrs. Hartley, is home alone and injured, she does all she can to help. At the same time, her cousins, Sophie and Sebastien, take over the work on the farm until their father returns with the generator that they have shared with other farm neighbours. As the storm rages on, Alice and Sophie must make difficult decisions - decisions that could mean the difference between life or death. Reviewed by BPL volunteer LS
