From the depths come the words “Dona nobis pacem” rising higher as the high voices, trumpets and timpani join in. It is the music of the B Minor Mass reaching toward the almighty with that plea “Grant us Peace”.
Johann Sebastian Bach was an innovator who took the musical forms of his time and molded them into works of great precision and still great passion. As Paul Elie relates, contemporary musicians such as Glenn Gould or Pau Casals and many others would take Bach’s works and reinvent them for the present day. The development of modern recording technology has actually taken away from the “special concerts and certain churches” and out into the world.
Master composer and genius, Bach would still sign off his manuscripts with the letters S.D.G. (Solo Dei Gloria)

I confess that I checked out this book in order to read about the legendary pianist, Glenn Gould (the pages are in the index). But then I back-tracked to read the simultaneous narratives on J.S. Bach and several interesting musicians whose lives were influenced by Bach's music ~ Albert Schweitzer, Leopold Stokowski and Pablo Casals. The most interesting part (pg. 218 - 226), which I've re-read several times, details and analyzes Gould's 1955 recording of the Goldberg Variations, which launched his international career.
