You could fall asleep while reading this book. Instead of trying to rope in the reader with some "mystery" or "intrigue", we're expected to plough through characters whose relationship to the murders isn't very clear.

Another fine volume in a quirky series featuring Belle Epoque bookseller and amateur detective Victor Legris and the colourful characters of his menage. In 1870 Paris was a city devasted by international and civil wars and some doubted it would survive. Twenty years later it was 'the capital of Europe' and the undisputed centre of art in the modern age as well as being a techological and financial powerhouse. But in this novel, the past and the debt owed to it intrude on the ebullience of the present. A cunning plot, and serviceable style carry the novel along, but it is the characters that really distinguish it. For readers who aren't as familiar as the authors with the period, every reference is explained in copious endnotes. They make you want to go and read all the books mentioned in this evocation of a great city at its zenith.
