Henry Barthes is an educator with a talent to connect with his students. Yet as a substitute teacher he hides his gift to avoid emotional connections. When an assignment places him at a school with a burned-out administration and an apathetic student body, he becomes a role model as a teacher. His emotional bond with the students and teachers help him see he is not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.

Perhaps I am not an existentialist after all. This one too dark for me. I am not a prude but this was not to my liking. Great acting, significant conflict and wildly creative but I chose not to watch it about 1/3 of the way into the movie.

Pretty good movie but kind of slow at times but some great acting!

A heartbreaking film that truly gives teaching a face and soul. Though the situations and the school itself are on the fringe of extreme, they didn't feel too far from reality. Stand out performances by James Caan, Marcia Gay Harden, Adrien Brody, Betty Kaye, and Sami Gayle. A really well-acted and well-scripted movie.

Cannot rate. Wow, I could only bear to watch this for 15 minutes due to the grime/grit real life portrayal. Great cast. Makes me thankful I no longer have children in school & always assumed this was a big city problem...probably not. Detachment - perfect title.

This is a very good movie. If you work in the mental health industry you may want to give it a pass (this is your job on film). You will not feel happy after this movie, very real and gritty.

Disturbing but very good. Lots of well known actors in cast.

This portrait of an inner-city school, taking that all the bad things are compressed into minutes, from my experience as a substitute, is quite real. While the teachers are excoriated daily, I suspect that a great deal of the educational problems in such schools are far beyond the control of the teacher. The bureaucrats portrayed in the film, with their super needs to increase test scores, seems to me quite accurate. Everybody has an easy answer to the problems. I suspect they are just a little more complex than eliminating teacher unions. The portraits of this film are a little tough to watch, but if you want to eliminate the problem, first you must get an understanding of what is going on. Get some of your education of education right here with this film.

Amazing, pround deeply affectimg movie Very real raw and gritty and a true treatise on what some teachers have to deal with and the complacency within society when it comes to parenting and education. Mr. Barthes is a genuine, gentle and kind human being who acts from his heart Definitely a five star movie in my books!
