Arthur Pfefferkorn, is a middle-aged college professor with long dead literary aspirations. When his oldest friend, William de Vallee, is lost at sea, Pfefferkorn is torn between envy and grief, for de Vallee not only outshone Pfefferkorn professionally, but married the woman Pfefferkorn loved. Pfefferkorn's decision to reconnect with de Vallee's widow sets in motion a surreal chain of events, plunging him into a shadowy realm of double crosses and intrigue, a world where no one can be trusted, and nothing can be taken seriously.

This book may have its clever moments, but I learned something about myself when attempting to listen to it: I would like to read about characters that I like. The protagonist here doesn't fall into that category! Didn't finish it.

I do agree with the rating below. It was dreadful and the ending of the book was just plain stupid. Sorry Jesse, not your best work at all.

Um......I really don't know what to say about this other than I was incredibly disappointed. I looked forward to reading this one, but about halfway through, I skipped to the end, and even then, I was shaking my head. What was he thinking? I THINK this was supposed to be a satire on detective/spy novels but what it came to was an author, who feels quite entitled, making a hash of the whole thing. The person who narrated the audiotape was quite good, but my advice is just skip it. It was dreadful.
