The stitches are all shown in one color thread on a white background. For some stitches this makes it difficult to see where the needle went in and where it came out. The hardanger section is probably the best, but since I don't do openwork, I didn't really care. I have at least a dozen embroidery books that are better than this one, so there's really nothing positive I can say. Pass on this one and keep looking.
