Without a doubt one of the strongest of the new crop of historical novelists. "Rebellion" is volume 2 of the "Insurrection" trilogy about the rise of Robert the Bruce. Though eminently readable as a standalone, this book continues the tale of Scotland's struggle for independence from the grasp of England's Edward I (the Hammer of the Scots). Not since Nigel Tranter's popular Bruce trilogy, published over forty years ago, has there been such a masterful recounting of this pivotal time in the history of Scotland. The only disappointment is that volume 3 of the trilogy is not due to be published until 2014.
