Rome was often a complex combination of the glorious and the outrageous, the dazzling and the lewd, the majestic and the shockingly brutal. Nowhere is this seen more than through its monuments. There were splendid arenas where no form of torture was deemed too cruel, places of worship where the gods were honored with shocking ritualistic sacrifices, and pleasure palaces where wanton sexual depravity was encouraged. There was also its spectacular highway system, built on the backs of conquered cultures. But could this brilliant achievement have paved the road to ruin by leading its enemies straight to its heart?-- cover.

Awesome !!# 420

This anthology was produced by the History Channel. It's description of Decisive Battles using digital figures is confusing, repetitive and missing a lot of relevant facts. The biographies of Julius Caesar, Caligula and Constantine dwell more on the sensational side and again are superficial missing a lot of relevant facts that would make the events more understandable. Constantine appears to have been vetted by the Christian Church and presents stories told by Eusebius, a bishop who hadn't met the Emperor until 325 AD, as fact. A number of statements made in the series are completely incorrect. This series is history light made for TV and should not be considered an authoritative source of information.
