The tale of a young writer who falls for a woman who disappears while he is pretending to edit a book that doesn't exist. College students Julio and Emilia both claim to have read Proust. It turns out to be a weighty lie, because literature binds them. Reading becomes an act of foreplay. And then they read one story too many. The writing is on the wall, but they fight it, even as they recognise that they're just going through the motions. And, then, soon enough, it's over. Emilia goes to Madrid. And eventually, of course, dies. Julio stays in Chile, raises a bonsai and goes all-out in pretending to have been hired to type out a famous author's manuscript.

Smart and short. A great read.

This short novel is, like a bonsai, a lovely miniature, a slightly ironic love story.

Decent first novel, but the author is no Roberto Bolano.
