The beginning made me wonder if this would be funny but in fact it strives to be farcical and is populated with a wealth of rather believably petty/inbred/low class characters. A novel doesn't have to be one-note, obviously, but it's like this is suffering an identity crisis. Probably akin to the Indian princess (baptised a Christian, of course) I couldn't connect with the protagonist either and gave up after a few chapters.

Enjoyed life in 1800 something England. Will this put it on my completed list?

The detail of the setting, customs and dress make this cosy mystery richer than most.

So fun, it's better then her other book. I really laugh at some of the characters in this book. The author has such talent!

the Maharajah's daughter, Mink, and her maid, Pooki, move into a grace and favour apartment in Queen Victoria's Hampton Court. Major General Bagshot is poisoned with arsnic and Mink needs to find the murdered to prove that Pooki did not kill him with her pigeon pie, made for the pot luck picnic.

I was so happy to borrow this after reading The Tortoise etc. This book is equally sweet, although much sillier. Set in Victorian Times, it's about the royal hangers-on that live in Hampton Palace, and this time it's a proper murder mystery. If you like cozy murder mysteries or (gahh) that Macall Smith guy, you should enjoy this.
