Bill, the "Nameless Detective," and his wife Kerry were in the Sierra foothills, just outside of Six Pines, falling in love with a cabin. It was all perfect, until Kerry went missing. They'd seen Balfour at breakfast at the diner and Kerry remembered his name-- which was unfortunate, because when she ran into him along the trail on that sunny afternoon and called him by name, he panicked. And that's when Bill's nightmare began. With longtime associate Jake Runyon, Bill begins a search that uncovers what price the citizens in a town without pity might pay.

The worst Pronzini ever. The story is insipid. There is no MYSTERY anywhere in this book. Most of the 300 pages are nothing more than verbosity of no real interest to the story. 25 pages would have been enough to get through this amateurish opus. Pronzini has always been like tepid water, and that is okay; but Hellbox is one big chunk of icy down my back. I was glad to finish this piece of swill.

The book was okay – but not one of my favorites.

A sure bet for a decent read; after all, Prinzini has published over 3 dozens of books. There were too much minor details that were of no consequences (such as to recharge the cell phone one day but no mention of the act days afterwards) from start to finish and a few times annoyingly slow when the main characters should be frantic to act.

Bill Pronzini's "nameless detective" books are always worth reading (even though he's no longer nameless) - but this was not my favorite in the series.
