Add a CommentThrilling read exploring London and a family’s secrets from WWII era through present day. A teen witnesses her mother in a horrifying act and questions the experience years later. Warning! Author Kate Morton’s story will leave you racing from page to page.
To write a book involving flashbacks is difficult. To write a great book involving flashbacks is nearly impossible but, Kate Morton nailed it. I enjoyed the storyline and the ending. I did have to re-read part of it to see if the clues to the ending were there. The story based during World War II seemed an appropriate read during the pandemic.
My first Kate Morton book. What a beautiful storyteller she is, every detail is important. I will be thinking about these characters long after the book has ended.

This was a good book. It was a great page-turner.
The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that there is an overlap between what Laurel learns and reveals about her mother and the story of Dorothy actually living that life. It gets repeated that way, so that gets a bit disconcerting.
Returned this before finishing. Hard to understand the writing.
Couldn’t get interested.
checked out in Dec 2018 - returned unread. Kate usually writes great novels.
What an excellent twist. Never saw it coming.
One of the few books that genuinely shocked me at the end. I will have to read more of hers!
