An adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, this film stars Alain Delon as Tom Ripley, a duplicitous American charmer in Rome on a mission to bring his privileged acquaintance Philippe Greenleaf back to the United States; what initially seems a carefree tale of friendship soon morphs into a thrilling saga of seduction, identity theft, and murder. Watched the Hollywood 1999 version with Matt Damon titled The Talented Mr. Ripley a couple times and just getting around to watch this 1960 French original, first adaptation of Patricia Highsmith' s 1955 novel. But like most French crime films, it has a moralistic ending that differs from the spirit of the novel - bad guys get away with murder more often than not.

Note: The interview with Highsmith in the blu-ray disc is interesting and informative. Her unusual lifestyle helped her creativity as a novelist, and we are the beneficiaries.

Nobody can complain about dashing Alain Delon in a role of Mr. Ripley here! And movie being 60 years old, really “aged” well. Pleasure to watch.

Ms Mustard is right this French film is much better than the 90's remake. This role showcases why Alain Delon was such a huge star.

not my usual pick for a film, but enjoyed this one - and it's much better than the US remake.

Alain Delon is STUNNING (I think the dvd box says "at his most impossibly beautiful", and a VERY good actor at such a young age. The supplementary material: interview with Delon is very interesting too. Much prefer this to the American remake with Jude Law and Matt Damon.
