An excellent first novel. Using the police procedural a format, Kirby explores a number of themes and paints a detailed portrait of the city of Montreal in winter. Anyone who has ever lived through a Montreal winter will immediately recognize the city. If they no longer live there they will either remember the experience with nostalgia or count their blessings for no longer having to face that climate. I look forward to reading his second Luc Vanier novel.
