"When the mysterious daughter of Prester John appears on the doorstep of her father's palace, she brings with her news of war in the West--the Crusades have begun, and the bodies of the faithful are washing up on the shores of Pentexore. Three narratives intertwine to tell the tale of the beginning of the end of the world: a younger, angrier Hagia, Queen of Pentexore and the blemmye-wife of John, who takes up arms with the rest of her nation to fight a war they barely understand; Vyala, a lion-philosopher entrusted with the care of the deformed and prophetic royal princess; and another John, John Mandeville, who in his many travels discovers the land of Pentexore--on the other side of the diamond wall meant to keep demons and monsters at bay."--P. [4] of cover.

As always, Valente's writing is almost baroque in it's level of embellishment, and she leverages myth, metaphor, and poetry to create something truly stunning. Unfortunately, it's been a few years since I read the first novel in this duology, and The Folded World didn't do a great job standing alone. I recommend reading this while the memory of The Habitation of the Blessed is still fresh.

“For the world has chosen and it says: make me whole. Think of us as a kind of haggard Calypso, offering everything, asking the world to choose anew. But it’s a lie, really. There is only one choice and it is always the same. Only in Pentexore was any other ever possible. The world always says: I choose to wither and die if it means love and tapestries and sons and suitors, if it means stories and wars and a thousand ships launching. And we only give the world what it wants.”
