I'm taking "A Music History Overview" course at the University of Ottawa in preparation for my RCM History Exam in August. The instructor recommended that we check out this former text book about music history. Granted the new book has a lot more "Do-your-own-research-on-the-web" things, but this book didin't really augment the new textbook. So, my suggestion is borrow it if you're really lost, learining on your own and short on time, otherwise, just leave it. :D
