“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is the second movie in the “Hobbit” trilogy of movies. It follows Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and a group of dwarves as they travel to the dwarves’ mountain home in order to defeat the dragon that’s inhabited the dwarven kingdom. Along the way, Gandalf takes off on his own side quest involving an ancient villain, and Bilbo and the dwarves run into the elves of Mirkwood forest. After a grand conundrum with the elves where Legolas shows up with the a female elf named Tauriel, Bilbo and the dwarves escape Mirkwood, and end up in Laketown before heading to the mountain to face off against Smaug, the dragon under the mountain. This movie is wonderful in every way. Its plot is quick moving, interesting, and well-written. The characters are lovable, and the actors and actresses do a brilliant job of bringing their characters to life. The special effects in this movie are absolutely breathtaking – they are so realistic that all of the settings feel as though the audience is actually in them. The character, makeup, and costume designs are outstanding. The author of this review highly recommends “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”. It is a breathtaking, incredible movie that is sure to capture the hearts and imaginations of everyone, young or old, Tolkien fan or not. Let it be known that in order to understand the events of this film as well as the other two “Hobbit” movies, no prior knowledge of the “Lord of the Rings” series or other works of Tolkien’s is needed. The author of this review believes this film to be suitable for ages eleven and up.
