Lynne Rae Perkins has a wonderful ability to write books that feel light without offering lightweight content. Breezy and fun escapades that contain plenty of danger and transformation without angst or anxiety. Deftly amusing phrasing, images, and voices that often disguise their wisdom. Admirable characters whose flaws make them all the more appealing. Silliness that never seems frivolous or mocking. Effortlessly accessible. This one is about a group of squirrels made inadvertent heroes by unexpected circumstances, questing first to help each other and then their larger community. Squirrels are not the most linear, single-minded creatures ever, though, and Perkins draws on that to great comedic and problematic effect. She definitely must have spent a good deal of research time imagining what the world must be like from inside a squirrel's head, presenting it in a tale that is meaningfully fun.
