Read this to 5 year old but only because I knew he was ready for it.
It deals with reality as he was very curious about prey and how it works in the wild and this book deals with it simply and shows why it is like that ending with the needs of the family/cycle and how there's survival of the fittest. My son asked questions and reasoned why they all couldn't live or why the wolf couldn't have jumped differently and avoided the outcome and I explained and talked with him. He was happy with the story and still asked to read it again.
I think it is done really well for a child story and isn't done too graphically or with too much gore or the likes.
It's nice to have real options for kids who are ready and parents comfortable with it.
