Railways & the Raj

How the Age of Steam Transformed India
Jan 01, 2018Liber_vermis rated this title 3 out of 5 stars
This substantial book covers the history and development of railroads in India (and Pakistan and Bangladesh) from their introduction in the 1850s up to the present. Drawing on memoirs, railroad company reports, and government inquiries; and his personal train travel around India; the author has composed a revealing social history of the impact of the railroad on south Asia. The book is complimented with some vintage and contemporary photographs; and five maps. A brief annotated bibliography, endnotes, and an index are provided. This reader would have preferred maps of the four main railroads, showing their key stations (mentioned in the text) and junctions, rather than the large scale national network maps.
