King's Dragon is a somewhat jumbled but very engaging start. Make no mistake, it definitely feels like the start of a long series: Many characters are introduced, along with many mysteries and questions. Plenty of stuff happens, but it all very much has the feeling of getting the story set up for even bigger and better things, and in a lot of ways you as the reader are not really sure what's going! Still, Elliott sets up a fascinating and clearly well-developed world, with interesting characters who are easy to root for (or, in some cases, against). Despite the length, it's an easy read. It's a multiple-POV book, alternating chapters for different characters, so often the desire to find out what's happening with your favorite character will keep you reading way past your bedtime...
