Emotion runs higher in this second installment than later releases: Brunetti's boss Patta is hilariously pompous, condescending, and incompetent, while the darkness that pervades life in Italy is palpably tragic. Readers might feel they're getting some closure (spoiler alert: a bad guy dies), but the last page will be devastating as it reveals how much that doesn't help.
