Reading this as an adult, I realized that Madeline was not really an orphan (which is what I thought she was as a child), but instead a child who lived at a boarding school, which was apparently very common in Europe, especially among the upper classes. Kind of sad, but interesting that my mother never disabused me of the notion that she was an orphan (I don't know if we even discussed it).
