I loved the vintage, garage-y feel of this album. As the lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong put it himself, it's like the second Foxboro Hot Tubs album (Foxboro Hot Tubs is a Green Day side project). Although many critics did not like this album, I appreciate that Green Day, with all their fame, decided to take a risk and branch out a bit. The album started out with a short, melodic See You Tonight, going into an energetic Fuck Time, then a blasting Stop When the Red Lights Flash, a song that just calls for attention ("I'll make you surrender"). Come to think of it, flashing red lights seem to be a common theme in the trilogy, looking back to Uno's Oh Love ("Oh love, won't you stop when the red lights flash?") and Tre's Dirty Rotten Bastards ("Dust to dust when the red light flashes"). I wonder what the band had in mind. A song I didn't love was Nightlife, an autotuned, reggae-style jumble featuring Lady Cobra (I'm sorry...who?). But, like I said, I think Green Day could've done much worse for a pop-punk band attempting R&B styles of music. And of course, Stray Heart is such a feel-good song with an adorable music video. This album has such a variety songs, anyone who listens to it will be able to find a few tracks they like. Give it a listen!
