A fantastic, contemporary young adult novel also great for adults. This story follows a year in the life of Willow - a twelve year old genius who doesn't fit in with other middle schoolers. Tragedy and challenges abound but Willow continually (and unknowingly) influences others around her to improve their lives. Universal themes of grief, community, nature and deception play through the narrative. Counting by 7s is full of quirky, strong characters, and the chapters shift between Willow's first-person account and a third-person omniscient narrator. This technique provides a well rounded narrative with more depth than if we only heard from Willow.
