Year of the Horse: a Lunar New Year Booklist

2026 is the Year of the Horse on the Chinese Zodiac. The Horse represents positive traits like hard work, bravery, responsibility, independence and resilience, as well as negative traits like impulsivity, impatience, and becoming easily frustrated when things are moving slow. The protagonists of the books on this list all embody most, if not all, of the traits of a Horse. The Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring, as well as a new year on the lunisolar calendar. This is the most important holiday in China, and is also celebrated in Korea and Vietnam, as well as other Asian countries. Each year is represented by one of 12 different animals, all of which are pulled from an ancient Chinese poem telling the story of 12 mythical animals which descended from the heavens to help people celebrate the coming of spring and a new crop. *PLEASE NOTE: Not all Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders observe the lunar calendar.
