I found this book to be less than 'gripping'. Not to be compared to the other novels by this author.

An indifferent story - a mother caught up in appearances to the detriment of her homosexual son. Since he died many years ago, she was never able to reconcile with him. A go-nowhere book. I'd not recommend it to anyone despite the hype of other Canadian authors whose books I've not read - nor would I, based on their evaluation of this one.An indifferent story - a mother caught up in appearances to the detriment of her homosexual son. I dragged myself through this book to its conclusion. Father disappearing and seeming to to nowhere. Would not recommed this book - what was the point to it all?

An excellent book (from my perspective a little less so than "The Japanese Lover". The story of a family led by the strong and determined mother. Takes place in Malaysia prior to the Japanese invasion and continues on to the present day. The tragic death of one of her first-born twins begins the downward spiral of her family.

I was pulled into this story from page 1. The plot, including background on the legal profession, as well as the story itself kept me turning page upon page. It was one of the very best legal-based stories I've ever read (including Grisholm)!

This was a very intriguing book. The writer combined the lives of the betrayed wife with the widows of this Italian town and the daughter of her estranged husband. Worth reading!

It's been some time since I've read her books. This one exceeded all my expectations - a mix of legal and oriental history make this an excellent and non-stop, page-turning read!

Certainly one of the least compelling books I've read. Found the characters to be weakly portrayed. Also hoped to find more indepth information about the times back then. Wouldn't recommend it.

A deeply disturbing account of one child's tormented life. It allows the reader to experience a glimpse of the unbelievable reality of his life which is common to so many children - many of whom are not identified by the system.
